Bowl Projections (and more!) Week 10

We’re one week closer to deciding who will be heading to Houston on December 27th. Here’s our weekly look at who CFB experts from around the country are projecting to the 2013 Texas Bowl:

  • Big 12/Big Ten Bloggers: Kansas State vs. Iowa
  • Brad Edwards – ESPN: Kansas State vs. Minnesota
  • Mark Schlabach – ESPN: Kansas State vs. Iowa
  • Jerry Palm – Kansas State vs. Iowa
  • Jason Kirk – SBNation: Kansas State vs. Nebraska
  • Kansas State vs. Minnesota
  • Stewart Mandel – Sports Illustrated: Kansas State vs. Iowa
  • Texas Bowl Staff: Kansas State vs. Iowa

Where we stand: Kansas State continues to be the favorite from the Big 12 side, as they moved one win closer to bowl eligibility with a dominating 41-7 win over Iowa State. The Wildcats travel to #25 Texas Tech on Saturday before hosting TCU the following week. West Virginia also secured their 4th win of the season on Saturday against TCU and could be in our range depending on how the final few weeks shake out.

On the Big Ten side, Iowa wasn’t able to top #24 Wisconsin this weekend, but they remain in the driver’s seat for our Big Ten selection and were the most popular among our prognosticators. The 5-4 Hawkeyes just need one more win to reach bowl eligibility and face 1-7 Purdue on Saturday.

Minnesota also continued their excellent season, winning a 42-39 shootout with a scrappy Indiana team that has been giving other Big Ten teams fits despite the Hoosiers’ 3-5 record. The Golden Gophers now sit at 7-2, one of their best starts in recent history, and were also a popular Texas Bowl pick after making their first trip to Houston in 2012.

Likely 2014 matchup: Each week, we’ll take a look at what our potential matchup would be next year, as we move up two spots in the Big 12 and into a rotation of selections in the SEC. Here’s our (admittedly somewhat wild) guess as to who could be our teams if the 2014 lineup was played this year:

  • Big 12 #3 (after CFB Playoff): Oklahoma State Cowboys
  • SEC selection (pool of bowls after CFB Playoff & Capital One Bowl): Texas A&M Aggies

Game ball goes to: the entire Michigan State Defense: The Spartans put in a ridiculous performance against hated rival Michigan on Saturday. Michigan State held the #21 Wolverines to minus 48 yards rushing and piled up  seven sacks in a 29-6 win in East Lansing. They held Michigan to just 168 yards of total offense, just one week after the Wolverines accounted for 751 yards against Indiana, and well below the 445 yards per game the Michigan offense was averaging coming into the game. The win was the Spartans largest margin of victory in the rivalry dating back to 1967.

In the uniform department: Northwestern will break out these patriotic uni’s for their matchup with Michigan on November 16th. The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game with 100% of the proceeds going to the Wounded Warriors Project. Hats off to Northwestern & Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald for supporting a great organization. <<<MORE INFO>>>

In the “are you kidding me?!” department: Sacred Heart WR Moses Webb shows a great example of why you never quit on a play, redeeming himself for a lost fumble by stripping the thieving defender, recovering the fumble and running it back in for a Sacred Heart touchdown. <<<WATCH HERE>>>
