Where we stand: A big college football weekend got off to an early start on Thursday night, as Auburn took down Kansas State in Manhattan in a game that we were luckily able to catch in person. The excitement continued into Saturday, where a pair of upsets shook up the SEC pecking order and 2014 AdvoCare Texas Kickoff champion LSU made their first entry into our projections. The SEC picks remain scattered, rotating between the Bayou Bengals, Missouri, South Carolina, and Mississippi State, fresh off their big upset on the road against the Tigers.
Most of the Big 12 was off this weekend, including popular bowl picks TCU and Texas. The aforementioned Kansas State fell in a close game to Auburn, missing three field goals in a game that could have easily gone the Wildcats’ way. Next weekend the Longhorns face what may be a must win for bowl eligibility when they travel to Kansas.
Our current best guess is Texas turns their season around and emerges from the Big 12 to make their first trip to Houston since facing Rice at Reliant/NRG Stadium in 2010. On the SEC side, we think Ole Miss may drop a couple games in a tough SEC West and will end up the best match in the SEC’s pool
Looking ahead: A big time Big 12/SEC Thursday night showdown highlights a somewhat slower week 4 as we begin to move into the meat of conference play:
- Texas Tech @ Oklahoma State: 6:30 PM CST (Thursday), ESPN
- Arkansas vs. Texas A&M (Arlington): 2:30 PM CST, CBS
- Texas @ Kansas: 2:00 PM CST, Fox Sports 1
Inspirational Story of the Week: This comes from from Will Green and Sports Illustrated, who relay the incredible story of once-homeless Boise State defensive tackle Antoine Turner. Turner, who spent the last few years living on park benches and sleeping in his girlfriend’s car, earned a scholarship at Boise State and is now working his way on the field more and more.
Best Bodyguard, Mascot Edition: Texas A&M’s mascot corporal blocked better than SMU (the Mustangs gave up eight sacks on Saturday) for most of the day, protecting the Aggie mascot from an SMU player as he ran towards the sideline.
Reveille, however, remained unimpressed:
Look What I Found: Pitt defensive back Lafayette Pitts has an interception literally fall into his lap during the Panthers close loss to Iowa on Saturday
The Hail Mary before the Hail Mary: Arizona needed a miracle and asked for it in the way most people would
