John Harris Says the Fun Starts Soon!
The AP top 25 poll was released earlier this week and there’s a familiar school at the top of the charts, if you will.
This was the fifth time in history, and the third time under head coach Nick Saban, that the Crimson Tide has been anointed the best team in college football. It’s also the eighth straight season for the Tide to be named in the preseason top five.
Yes, I said eighth season; the run started in 2009. How right were the pollsters?
2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015 ended in national championships.
2014 and 2015 resulted in playoff berths, the only school to earn a berth to each year of the playoffs.
The Crimson Tide have a combined record of 98-11 over that time span.
The preseason polls are often criticized for being inaccurate and missing wildly, but as it pertains to Alabama, they’ve been dead on.
Clemson is number two and knows the pain all too well of being number two after losing a heartbreaking, scintillating national championship game to Alabama to end 2015. Clemson beat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl in a CFP semifinal but the Sooners may be back, yet again. The Sooners are number three in the preseason poll and a heavy favorite to be the Big 12 champion in 2016.
Florida State rounds out the top four, even though the Seminoles have major quarterback issues at the moment.
The top ten looked as such.
- Florida State
- Ohio State
- Notre Dame
The overall conference breakdown looked like this in the top 25 SEC – 6 teams (Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Georgia, Florida) Pac 12 – 5 teams (Stanford, Washington, UCLA, USC, Oregon) B1G – 4 teams (Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa) Big 12 – 4 teams (Oklahoma, TCU, Oklahoma State, Baylor) ACC – 4 teams (Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina, Louisville) AAC – 1 team (Houston) Independent – 1 team (Notre Dame)
